This AS3786 standard applies to smoke alarms intended for installation in Australia/NZ within residential accommodation where connection to fire control stations is not required.

This standard specifies requirements for the design and performance of electrically operated smoke alarms containing both detection and alarm facilities. It allows, although it does not require, the inclusion within the smoke alarm of facilities for interconnection with other similar units, or accessories. Where such facilities are included, this standard specifies requirements for the connection interface.

CSIRO specialise in the ‘verification of conformity’, whereby the extent to which a product, process or service fulfils specified requirements is systematically examined. These requirements can be part of a national or international standard, or they can be a specification or code of practice that has been widely adopted by an industry sector as a de facto standard.

    • REACH
          • REACH

REACH is a regulation of the European Union, adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals.

REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. It entered into force on 1 June 2007. It has an impact on most companies across the EU.

To comply with the regulation, companies must identify and manage the risks linked to the substances they manufacture and market in the EU. They have to demonstrate to ECHA (European Chemical Agency) how the substance can be safely used, and they must communicate the risk management measures to the users.

Some substances have hazards that have serious consequences, e.g. they cause cancer (carcinogenic), or they have other harmful properties and remain in the environment for a long time (persistent) and gradually build up in animals (bio accumulative); Therefore, ECHA has published a Candidate List of substances of very high concern (SVHC) that are identified as potential targets to be regulated for use within the EU by the process of authorization. This is the letter “A” in the acronym REACH. Substances are added to the Candidate List by ECHA. Any substance included on the Candidate List may ultimately be added to Annex XIV of the REACH regulation by decision of the European Commission. The identification of a substance as a SVHC and its inclusion in the Candidate List is the first step of the authorization procedure.

Effective October 28, 2008, fifteen (15) substances were initially placed on the Candidate List. Last updated on Jun 27, 2018 has now 191 substances.

In order to place on the market or use substances with properties that are deemed to be of “very high concern” industry must apply for an authorisation. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) publishes a list containing substances to be considered for the authorisation process
